‘Chhaava’ Sets New Record with 12 Million Ticket Sales on BookMyShow

Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film, which hit theaters on February 14, is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha Empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Vicky Kaushal's movie Chhaava has created history by becoming the first Hindi film to gross over 12 million tickets on BookMyShow, reports an announcement made on Tuesday.

Directed by Laxman Utekar, the film, which hit theaters on February 14, is based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the son of Maratha Empire founder Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Kaushal plays the lead role of Sambhaji, while actress Rashmika Mandanna portrays his wife, Yesubai.

Produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava has also crossed an impressive Rs 550 crore in net earnings at the domestic box office.

BookMyShow's Chief Operating Officer of cinemas Ashish Saksena, in a statement, reported that ticket sales of Chhaava have now surpassed those of 2024 blockbuster Stree 2, which features Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor.

"Through an historic landmark that has rewritten the rules of the Indian cinematic landscape, Chhaava has overtaken all existing records to become the first Hindi film ever to reach the colossal 12 million ticket sale mark on BookMyShow," Saksena added. "This phenomenal achievement has Chhaava overtaking even blockbuster Stree 2, setting a new industry benchmark."

Saksena also observed that the film has seen an overwhlming response from all over India, with metros like Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Nagpur, Nashik, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, and Lucknow being among the top destinations in terms of ticket sales.

"Chhaava is not merely a box-office hit but a cultural phenomenon. It illustrates the time-tested strength of genuine storytelling based on our rich heritage. The record-breaking success of the film reaffirms our conviction that when powerful stories are coupled with outstanding performances, they produce cinematic magic that deeply touches the Indian audience," he added.

The movie also features Akshaye Khanna, Diana Penty, Neil Bhoopalam, Ashutosh Rana, Divya Dutta, and Vineet Kumar Singh.
