Actress-turned-MP Smriti Irani is ready to make a strong comeback to TV, playing her famous character of Tulsi Virani in the highly-awaited revival of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Drenched in confidence, Irani said that the years in politics have rendered her immune to fear or nerves.
Talking to NDTV, Irani looked back on her incredible journey through two challenging industries. I believe that for a 49 year old to need to have a 25 year streak, not only in the media but also in politics, that is a blessed streak because in the history of our country never as someone did, by the grace of God, excel in these competitive areas and even more so if you're a woman."
To be on top of your game all the time for 25 years in media and politics is not easy but that is also where destiny and luck have had a part to play," she said.
Scheduled to open on July 29, the remake has been put together in a mere three weeks—an ambitious schedule for a production of this scale. But Irani is not bothered. "I am a politician, nothing that you throw at me will make me nervous, ever," she said when questioned whether the tight deadline was stressful.
Discussing about the influence on audiences during her first run on television, Irani said, "I don't think that people, who have possibly seen me from a distance, realize that I am not being self-deprecating about the whole scenario."
She also mused over the strong connection audiences still have with her character, explaining, "I am aware that I became part of families, I became part of lives, you have a memory of me from your childhood that in itself is a big responsibility.". To be able to oscillate between the reel and the real world and yet hold on to that individual persona because you are part of the bigger organisations such as say the BJP and the television network or a series, you are one of the crowd within the bigger ecosystem within the crowd, to be able to hold on to your individual persona. to still create that individual impact that I think you want to ensure that you are still relatable to people.”
The producers released the first official promo on Monday evening, not long after the original show celebrated its 25th anniversary. Along with Irani in the remake are returning faces from the original series, such as Amar Upadhyay, Shakti Anand, Hiten Tejwani, and Gauri Pradhan, treating fans to a nostalgic revival with the characters they love.
