According to the police, the accused had entered the Bollywood star's home in the Satguru Sharan building in the upscale Bandra in the early hours of January 16 with the intention of theft.
Khan (54) was stabbed multiple times in the attack, after which he underwent a five-hour surgery at nearby Lilavati Hospital.

The official said that after assaulting the actor, the accused got a good sleep at a bus stop, changed his clothes, and reached the Bandra railway station, from where he moved to Dadar and then to Worli before proceeding to the Thane city.

Shehzad had made all the right preparations to not be caught by the police, but his backpack betrayed him, he said.

The official said the police had observed the backpack the accused was carrying in the CCTV footage they analyzed, and this gave a direction to the probe.

Later, with the help of CCTV, drum data, and online payment, the police trace the accused.

With the help of the CCTV shot of the alleged criminal face, the police studied men with criminal records who bore a likeness to him and took in some suspects. But when that too did not yield anything, they re-transected the CCTV footage of the area in Bandra, the official said.

The alleged culprit was found in a CCTV footage moving in the direction of Bandra railway station at around 7 am, and by then, he had changed his clothes, he said.

Shehzad, who had previously worked in a pub in Worli, stayed on the premises on January 16 night and remained unnoticed. Next day, he approached a labor contractor in the locality seeking employment and left for Thane.

The labour contractor had given the police Shehzad's mobile number, and on checking, it was found that he had done some online transactions during his run.

A court remanded the accused in five-day police custody after observing that the police contention of an international conspiracy cannot be ruled out.
