Actor Preity Zinta has stated that living abroad has strengthened her sense of love for India, and clarified that her recent religious pilgrimages should not be taken as political designs.
Zinta, all but returning to Bollywood after seven years with Rajkumar Santoshi's next project Lahore 1947, hogged the headlines recently when she visited the Maha Kumbh Mela and offered prayers at Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath temple during Mahashivratri. Such gestures have spawned rumors about a possible political plunge by her.
In an interactive session with her fans on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday evening, a fan asked outright if she was joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
While answering truthfully, Zinta posted:
"That's the problem with people on social media, everybody has become so judgemental off late.".
As I mentioned before, visiting a temple / Maha Kumbh and being proud of who I am & my identity does not translate to me entering politics or for that reason BJP. Being away from India has made me understand the actual value of my home country & like everyone else I do value India & all things Indian a lot more now (sic).
Zinta, now based in Los Angeles with her husband Gene Goodenough—a financial analyst—and twins Gia and Jay, also spoke about her parenting experience. She stressed the need to inculcate Indian values in her kids.
In another post, Veer-Zaara actress posted that, even though her husband is agnostic, they are having their children brought up as Hindus. She complained about continuously being criticized for honoring her religious and cultural roots.
"Since my husband is agnostic we are raising our children as Hindus. Unfortunately, I am subjected to constant criticism & this innocent pleasure is taken away from me by my decision being politicized every time. I feel I must continue to answer for being myself or taking pride in educating my children about their origins & religion. Chalo time to move on …Sending you lots of love n best wishes (sic)," she further added.
Zinta's comments reveal her wish to be able to celebrate her identity without being branded politically, as well as balancing the task of motherhood in a foreign environment.
