Netflix's 'Adolescence' Added to UK School Curriculum: Here's Why

Due to the massive success of Netflix's hit series Adolescence, schools across the U.K. are now incorporating it into their curriculum to promote lessons on anti-misogyny.

As part of a government-backed initiative, U.K. secondary schools will be screening Adolescence in classrooms. The show’s thoughtful and impactful exploration of crucial issues surrounding misogyny has been widely praised.

According to Variety, Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the necessity of making it available to the students. "As a father, watching this show with my teenage son and daughter, I can tell you-it hit home hard. It's an important initiative to encourage as many pupils as possible to watch the show."

Starmer went on to highlight the significance of open discussions with children, noting, "As I see from my own children, openly talking about changes in how they communicate, the content they’re seeing, and exploring the conversations they’re having with their peers is vital if we are to properly support them in navigating contemporary challenges and deal with malign influences."

He concluded by emphasizing the role of learning from young people and charity organizations to address the pressing issues raised in the show, saying, "Only by listening and learning from the experiences of young people and charities can we tackle the issues this groundbreaking show raises."

The show’s rise in popularity comes amid growing concerns about children’s increasing, unsupervised use of smartphones, which gives them easy access to harmful misogynistic content from figures like Andrew Tate and his brother Tristan, both of whom are embroiled in serious legal issues including human trafficking accusations.

Adolescence follows the Miller family as their world is turned upside down when their 13-year-old son, Jamie, is accused of murdering a classmate. The show dives deep into the subsequent investigation, exploring themes of family, truth, and justice. Each of the four episodes was filmed in a single continuous take, adding to the series' unique style.

Directed by Philip Barantini, Adolescence features standout performances from Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, Owen Cooper, Faye Marsay, Christine Tremarco, Mark Stanley, Jo Hartley, and Amélie Pease.
