Netflix has finally come out with an official release date for the much-hyped Season 3 of Squid Game, which premieres on June 27, 2025. To intensify the buildup, the streamer recently premiered a batch of first-look images, teasing an unsettling taste of the final installment of survival thriller Squid Game.
Directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, the dystopian thriller series with high stakes returns, promising further suspense, unexpected turns, and emotional turmoil. The recently leaked photos suggest Lee Jung-jae's Gi-hun character will continue in his unyielding fight against the evil geniuses driving the lethal competition.
Netflix's official X (formerly Twitter) account posted the news, explaining:
Get ready for the ultimate game. Here's your first glimpse of Squid Game Season 3, coming June 27."
This was made after months of waiting since the cliffhanger finale of Season 2 of Squid Game was released on December 26, 2024.
Gi-hun's Quest for Revenge Continues
Picking up where the last season left off, Season 3 sees Gi-hun further step up his game to take down the sinister organization controlling the lethal game. But he is foiled by the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), who subtly opposes him.
Emotional tension is also on high this time around, with Gi-hun suffering from the shock of losing his best friend, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), as he fuels his revenge juices. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has indicated that the final season promises to explore intense moral quandaries and shocking betrayals, guaranteeing a riveting viewing experience.
Familiar Faces and What's in Store
Returning alongside Lee Jung-jae are fan-favorite actors Park Hae-soo and Wi Ha-joon, reprising their significant roles. Since its debut in 2021, Squid Game has captivated global audiences with its intense narrative and sharp social commentary, inspired by Hwang’s own experiences with financial hardship.
First-look photos capture eerie moments, such as a pink-clad guard in a mask pulling an unconscious player to a pink ribbon-bound coffin—a chilling glimpse into the show's dark and savage themes.
Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hinted at a dramatic finale by stating:
"I am thrilled to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit through the end of this story."
A Heartfelt Loss Within the Squid Game Family
In the midst of anticipation for Season 3, the Squid Game team and cast had recently lost long-time actress Lee Joo Sil, who passed away at the age of 80.
Lee Joo Sil played Park Mal Soon, who is the mother of Hwang Jun Ho (Wi Ha-joon) and the stepmother of Hwang In Ho (Lee Byung-hun), in Season 2. She had spent more than ten years fighting against stage 3 breast cancer and had previously already shared about how she fought it. Her appearance left an eternal impression on her fans, thus her death left the world as a great loss for the fraternity.
The Final Countdown Begins
As Squid Game is about to wrap up its thrilling epic, anticipation from viewers is in full swing. The first-look teaser by Netflix has only raised more conjectures, alluding to battles of power, dramatic showdowns, and unexpected twists in the last game.
As the final battle draws near, one last question lingers—who will take home the top spot in the final fight for survival?
