Oscar-winner music composer A.R. Rahman's mother Kareema Begum passed away in Chennai on Monday due to age-related ailments. The music maestro was really close to her mother and often remembered her during his live shows. He shared a picture of her on his Twitter page as his tribute.
Kareema Begum, whose original name was Kasthuri Shekhar got married to Rajagopala Kulashekharan, an Indian music composer known for his work in Malayalam films. After Rahman's father died she was the one who worked to raise him and his siblings. Kareema Begam played an important role in Rahman's career and motivated him to pursue a career as a musician.

Meanwhile, A.R. Rahman's fans have been offering condolences to him and his family in the comment section. "Losing a mother is irreplaceable. The vacuum remains forever. My deepest condolences to @arrahman and his family. May Allah give you the strength to hear the pain," said actress and politician Khushu Sundar in her condolence tweet.
Earlier while having an interview with Chennai Times, Rahman had talked about his mother. "She has music instincts. Spiritually she is much higher than me in the way she thinks and takes decisions. For instance, her decision to make me take up music. She made me leave school in Class XI and take up music and it was her conviction that music is the line for me," the musical genius said.
