Keanu Reeves Set to Return for John Wick 5

In John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves' character was apparently gunned down in an explosive shootout with his old buddy Caine, played by Donnie Yen. It turns out, though, that John Wick might be coming back for another mission at great risk.

Keanu Reeves is set to return as his legendary character the deadly assassin John Wick in the fifth film of the highly acclaimed action series, which has achieved a loyal following and even spawned spin-offs.

In John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves' character was apparently gunned down in an explosive shootout with his old buddy Caine, played by Donnie Yen. It turns out, though, that John Wick might be coming back for another mission at great risk.

Director Chad Stahelski, who directed all four of the preceding chapters, will also be sitting in the director's chair again for the next chapter.

Variety reports that Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chairman Adam Fogelson confirmed the production of John Wick 5 at the CinemaCon convention on Tuesday.

In addition, the studio is developing an animated prequel movie that will explore Wick's history, as well as a spin-off film based on Yen's character, Caine, who was introduced in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

The John Wick series premiered in 2014, bringing Reeves on board as a retired assassin who gets thrust back into the deadly business of assassins after thugs kill his cherished canine—the last parting gift of his deceased spouse. The commercial success of the original spawned three installments: John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023).

The universe will continue to grow with the new movie Ballerina, whose star is Ana de Armas. From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, in which Armas plays Eve Macarro, an expert assassin on a mission to revenge her father's death, is releasing in theaters worldwide in June. Reeves will also make a cameo as John Wick in the film.

Reeves will voice the animated prequel, which will detail John Wick's early years. The tale will surround his iconic accomplishment—taking out all of his enemies within a night in order to free himself from the control of the High Table and get back with his beloved Helen.

Stahelski will produce the animated feature with Reeves and Thunder Road's Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.

At the same time, the Caine spin-off will be helmed by Donnie Yen himself. Known for his roles in top Hollywood blockbusters such as Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and XXX: Return of Xander Cage, Yen will lend his expertise to the film.

As a Hong Kong-style action thriller, the film will have a script by Mattson Tomlin, who is also working on The Batman Part II.
