Pop star Katy Perry has made history with five other pioneering females by becoming part of the first all-female team to travel to the edge of space aboard Jeff Bezos' aerospace firm, Blue Origin.
The six-person crew traveled on their historic mission aboard the reusable New Shepard rocket — the NS-31 — which took off from Blue Origin's West Texas base, Launch Site One, at 8:30 a.m. CDT (7:00 p.m. IST) on Monday night.
Congratulating the success of the mission, Blue Origin tweeted on X: "The New Shepard booster has landed," and then, "Capsule touchdown. Welcome back, NS-31 crew."
This short but historic flight, Blue Origin's 11th human mission, took about 11 minutes and flew beyond the Karman line — the internationally recognized edge of outer space.
Perry had some notable companions on the flight: Aisha Bowe, a retired NASA rocket scientist and now CEO of STEMBoard; Amanda Nguyen, a research scientist in bioastronautics; film producer Kerianne Flynn; and reporters Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez.
In a statement, Blue Origin noted, “This is the first all-female flight crew since Valentina Tereshkova’s solo mission to space in 1963.”
This marked Blue Origin’s second flight of the year, bringing the company’s total number of space tourists to 52.
Aside from viewing weightlessness and an awe-inspiring panorama of the Earth, the crew also performed scientific experiments aboard. Bowe organized three research endeavors on human physiology and plant biology, a part of her overall mission to apply space science for the good of life on Earth.
Katy Perry, who has long been talking about her love for space, described the flight as a lifelong dream. "I've had a dream of going to space for 15 years and that dream comes true," she wrote on Instagram, sharing a video and an emotional caption.
She continued, "I am so privileged to be with five other amazing and inspiring women as we become the first ever all-female flight space crew!"
This historic expedition not only pushes the frontiers of space tourism but also shines light on the increasing number of women in space exploration.
