Hollywood star Jennifer Coolidge has revealed how her Emmy-winning performance in the popular OTT show The White Lotus not only rejuvenated her career but also changed her love life at 63.
During an interview with The Sunday Times, Coolidge revealed, "Even if I play a total weirdo in White Lotus, adorable men will come and talk to me.
This is much better than American Pie because folks were actually upset that Tanya fell off a boat. These men prefer you because they feel that you endured something. That show really upped my game."
Coolidge, who has gained a new level of fame after decades in Hollywood, also spoke candidly about the career lull she experienced between her early successes in the 2000s and her breakthrough role in The White Lotus in 2021. During this period, she was often typecast and overlooked.
Between 2006 and her stint in The White Lotus, Coolidge confessed to doing odd jobs and lacking direction. "I got very odd jobs, I had no guidance at all. I didn't know how to play the game," she confessed.
Casting directors usually only considered her as Stifler's Mom in American Pie, and she found herself cast a lot of the time as the high-strung, rich woman. "I played a lot of highly strung rich women, people thought, 'Oh, that's just what she does,'" she said.
Her career resurgence was due to Mike White, her old friend and creator of The White Lotus, who conceived the character of Tanya McQuoid after sharing a tent with Coolidge on an African holiday when she had been displaying odd behavior. "Do I think any other director would have cast me as Tanya? Probably not," Coolidge mused.
Even with all her new-found success, having won an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild award, Coolidge confirmed she still had to fight off self-doubt. Even when promoting her new thriller Riff Raff, which features herself along with Bill Murray and Pete Davidson, she spoke in amazement at having been cast among such seasoned talent.
