First, Hugh Jackman was turned down as Wolverine because he was too tall. The role had already been given to Scottish actor Dougray Scott, but he dropped out at the last minute. Marvel Studios' CEO Kevin Feige reported that at the time he was working for producer Lauren Shuler Donner to find an urgent replacement for the role. Lauren Shuler Donner said, although people were concerned about Jackman's height—he stands at 6 feet 3 inche she fought for him.
What happened was that Tom Cruise came up, his commitments were too strong, so Scott had to recon sider Jackman. Flown to Toronto for a second audition, Jackman felt initially uncertain - after the reading with screenwriter Tom DeSanto and director Bryan Singer.
Little acts of goodwill, though, were extended to Jackman by Feige. Right before he left, Fegei took him out to dinner, expressing the appreciation of the studio regardless of the outcome of the audition. It was a gracious act that would foresee Jackman eventually playing the role which turned his career into a skyrocketing venture.
