Anya Taylor-Joy's Serendipitous Engagement on the 'Forrest Gump' Bench

"It was a complete accident," Taylor-Joy recalled, smiling. "My husband proposed to me on a bench in Savannah, very much like the one in 'Forrest Gump'."

Anya Taylor-Joy shares in an interview with Chris Hemsworth the enjoyable tale of her engagement to coincide with the 30th anniversary of "Forrest Gump." The actress, Anya Taylor-Joy, stated on an Instagram post shared by Letterboxd that her now-husband, musician Malcolm McRae, got down on bended knee and proposed when they were sitting on what seemed like Forrest Gump's bench.

"It was a complete accident," Taylor-Joy recalled, smiling. "My husband proposed to me on a bench in Savannah, very much like the one in 'Forrest Gump'."

This bench is one derived from Robert Zemeckis's 1994 film starring Tom Hanks and Robin Wright. More importantly, it has its special place in movie history; in the movie, it occupied a significant role as a touching place for Forrest Gump to tell his life story to strangers all his life while waiting for a bus.

Reflecting on that time, Taylor-Joy chimed in, "He's from Alabama and I'm blond, so it just felt right. And when that music comes on, I still cry like a baby."

Taylor-Joy has also been in "Dune: Part Two" and was married to McRae in a very intimate wedding in New Orleans back in April 2022. A second celebration occurred in October 2023 in Venice, Italy.

Although the real bench from the movie is now in the Savannah History Museum, Taylor-Joy and McRae did find this—the very spot at Chippewa Square Bus Stop in Savannah where the memorable scenes were shot.
