Punjab-based Harnaaz Sandhu on Monday won the international beauty pageant to become Miss Universe 2021 and will be bringing India the Miss Universe crown after 21 years. Harnaaz has won several beauty pageants but she too had to face body shaming because of her physique, her mother revealed in an interview with BBC. Harnaaz faced several challenges due to her thin built but her family had always been a constant support. The 21-year-old has also won the title of Miss Diva 2021 and has been participating in beauty pageants since the age of 17. She also won Femina Miss India Punjab in 2019.

1. "Harnaaz was fat in childhood. We used to call her Kaddu but later she became thin. People used to call her but I told her that willpower should be strong and don't worry about anyone. This is your body and You should love yourself. If there was body shaming, she used to get upset but I used to encourage her," the mother told BBC.

2. Harnaaz's father Pritam Singh Sandhu also rejoiced as he said he was glad he trusted his children and allowed Harnazz to do modeling. Her mother Ravinder Kaur also shares how the mother and daughter duo have been like best friends and always exchanged secrets.
3. Harnaaz competed with 81 delegates from around the globe who participated in the international pageant that was held in Eilat, Israel. She was crowned as Miss Universe 2021 and Miss Paraguay 2021 Nadia Ferreira was declared as the first runner up. Miss Universe South Africa 2021 Lalela Mswan was the second runner-up for the pageant.
