Gary Oldman Admits to Perceived Mediocrity in 'Harry Potter' Role as Sirius Black

Expressing his self-assessment, Oldman stated, "I think my work is mediocre in it," and he believes he could have approached the role differently.

In a recent episode of Josh Horowitz's 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Hollywood actor Gary Oldman, known for his role as Sirius Black in the 'Harry Potter' franchise, offered a critical perspective on his own performance. The 65-year-old, whose streaming series 'Slow Horses' recently returned for its third season, described his portrayal of the beloved character as "mediocre."

Expressing his self-assessment, Oldman stated, "I think my work is mediocre in it," and he believes he could have approached the role differently. He pondered the possibility that his portrayal might have been influenced if he had read J.K. Rowling's original books before taking on the role, as his late co-star Alan Rickman had suggested. Oldman remarked on the podcast, "Maybe if I had read the books like Alan, if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what's coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently."

Gary Oldman first joined the 'Harry Potter' franchise in 2004's 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban' and reprised his role in 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.' He made a cameo appearance in the final film, 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.'

Despite his critique of his own performance, Oldman emphasized his gratitude for the franchise. In a recent interview on Drew Barrymore's talk show, he expressed appreciation for how the 'Harry Potter' series and Christopher Nolan’s 'Dark Knight' trilogy positively impacted his personal life. Oldman revealed that these projects allowed him to prioritize spending time with his children after becoming a single father in 2000.
