An actor-politician stokes another controversy with a social media post on Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on Wednesday.
Ranaut had previously been in the dock for her comments over the farmers' protests and, this time, in homage to Shastri on his 120th birthday, is said to seem to belittle the stature of Gandhi as the Father of the Nation.
"Country has no fathers; it has sons. Blessed are these sons of Mother India" Ranaut wrote on her Instagram Stories.
Later, in a second post, the actor gave credits to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuing the legacy of Gandhi about making the country clean:.
When the post on Shastri and Gandhi again pushed the controversy for the BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate didn't spare Ranaut without slamming her with the "lewd jibe" against Gandhi.
"BJP MP Kangana made this lewd jibe on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. Godse worshippers draw distinctions between Bapu and Shastri ji. Will Narendra Modi wholeheartedly forgive his party's new Godse devotee? There is the Father of the Nation, there are sons, and there are martyrs. Everyone deserves respect", Shrinate posted on X.
She herself has faced a controversy ahead of Lok Sabha elections in March for an offending post about the actor.
The controversial remarks of Ranaut have been condemned by another senior BJP leader from Punjab, Manoranjan Kalia.
"I condemn Kangana Ranaut's comments done on the 155th birth anniversary of Gandhi ji. In her short political career, she has developed a habit of making controversial statements," said Kalia in a video posted on social media.
"Politics is not her field. Politics is a serious affair. One must think before speaking. Her controversial remarks cause trouble for the party," he added.
It was just last month that Ranaut was criticized for pleading for the reinstatement of the three farm laws that were repealed in 2021.
An actor elected as MP in June this year says farmers' agitation against the three farm laws is creating "Bangladesh-type" situation in India, accusing the ones protesting the three farm laws of "dead bodies hanging and rape taking place".
actress later took it back, admitting that she had forgotten she was an artist, but a BJP member too.
