Deepika Padukone Reflects on Student Life, Admits Struggles with Math on 'Pariksha Pe Charcha'

Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone recently reflected on her childhood and academic struggles during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Pariksha Pe Charcha (PPC) programme.

Sharing a nostalgic moment, she revealed that she was a mischievous child who would leap from one sofa to another and admitted to struggling with mathematics.

The prime minister shared a clip of Padukone’s discussion on his official X page, highlighting her participation in a special episode focused on mental health.

"Among the most common topics #ExamWarriors want to discuss is mental health and well-being. Therefore, this year’s Pariksha Pe Charcha features a dedicated episode on this subject, airing tomorrow, February 12. And we have @deepikapadukone, who is deeply passionate about this cause, sharing her thoughts," Modi wrote.

Diagnosed with clinical depression in 2014, Padukone has since become a strong advocate for mental health awareness. In the preview clip, she shared, "I was a very naughty kid. I would climb and jump on sofas and chairs. Sometimes, we stress too much. I was weak in maths, and I still am."

She also praised the prime minister’s 2018 book Exam Warriors, which encourages self-expression over suppression.

"So always express yourselves—whether with your friends, family, parents, teachers. Journaling is also a great way to express yourself," she advised students.

Padukone thanked Modi for providing a platform where students can shift from being exam worriers to exam warriors.

"I wish all of you the very best. Do your best, and don’t forget to rest," she added.

On Instagram, she expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss mental health.

"Pariksha Pe Charcha is back with its 8th edition! This time, we’ll also discuss the importance of mental health. Thank you, Honourable Prime Minister @narendramodi, for your commitment to this cause. I look forward to launching our episode," she wrote.

Sharing her personal journey, she recalled, "I kept working non-stop until one day I fainted. A few days later, I realised I was suffering from depression."

In 2015, she publicly disclosed her diagnosis from the previous year. At an event in 2022, she reflected on her battle with depression, admitting, "There were days when I didn’t want to wake up. Sleep became my escape. I even had suicidal thoughts at times. I owe everything to my mother for recognizing the signs and symptoms."

The second episode of this insightful discussion will air on February 12, 2025, at 10 a.m.

Other notable Bollywood figures, including Vikrant Massey and Bhumi Pednekar, will participate in Pariksha Pe Charcha to help students foster creativity and a positive mindset in academics.

For the Sports and Discipline segment, athletes Mary Kom, Avani Lekhara, and Suhas Yathiraj will discuss goal setting, resilience, and stress management.

Meanwhile, spiritual leader Sadhguru will introduce mindfulness techniques for mental clarity and focus in the Mindfulness and Mental Peace episode.

A variety of experts from different fields will offer valuable insights to help students navigate both academic and personal challenges.

On Monday, Prime Minister Modi shared a video from the interaction, writing, "Had a wonderful discussion with young students on stress-free exams. Do watch Pariksha Pe Charcha. #PPC2025."
