Renowned filmmakers Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are joining forces once again for the sequel to their 2002 hit, "28 Days Later." Boyle, who directed the original zombie epidemic movie based on Garland's script, will take on the director's role, while Garland will be responsible for the screenplay. The new installment, titled "28 Years Later," is expected to kick off a trilogy.
Boyle and Garland, who also served as executive producers for the 2007 sequel, "28 Weeks Later," will produce the project alongside original producer Andrew Macdonald and Peter Rice, according to reports from entertainment news outlet Variety.
The first film, "28 Days Later," starred Cillian Murphy and followed the story of a man awakening from a coma to find that London and the world have been ravaged by a rage virus, turning people into aggressive, zombie-like creatures.
The sequel, "28 Weeks Later," directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, unfolded after the events of the initial film. It depicted military efforts to establish a safe zone in London, but the virus resurfaces after two siblings break protocol in search of their mother.
With the reunion of Boyle and Garland, fans of the original film can anticipate an exciting continuation of the franchise, as "28 Years Later" marks the beginning of a new trilogy in the post-apocalyptic world introduced in "28 Days Later."
