Over 30 years after their only on-screen collaboration in Interview with the Vampire, Brad Pitt says he’s open to reuniting with Tom Cruise — but with one major caveat.
Speaking to E! News at the Mexico City premiere of his upcoming film F1, the 61-year-old actor quipped, “Well, I’m not gonna hang my ass off airplanes and s–t like that, so when he does something again that’s on the ground.”
The lighter jab was an acknowledgement of Cruise's daredevil image, especially within the Mission: Impossible series, where he performs his own death-defying stunts on a regular basis.
Even though they have had quite different strategies in action filmmaking, Pitt had nothing but good words for Top Gun: Maverick's star. "He's so sweet. He's sweet," he opined, also reaching back to when they competed against each other go-karting in the early 1990s. As for who was best on the track, Pitt conceded, "He got me in the end. I gotta admit."
Interview with the Vampire (1994) is still the only collaboration the two megastars have shared, but there was once another potential reunion. Director Joseph Kosinski said both Cruise and Pitt were initially considered to be the leads in his take on Ford v Ferrari. But the studio didn't greenlight the project because of budget issues, and the 2019 sports drama was ultimately directed by James Mangold with Christian Bale and Matt Damon.
Kosinski — who helmed Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick and teamed him with Pitt on F1 — spoke in a recent GQ interview about working with both actors. "Tom always takes it to the edge, but then is super capable and very talented," Kosinski explained, going on, "They both have the innate ability for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom perhaps frightening us a little bit more."
Mission: Impossible stunt coordinator Graham Kelly, who also worked on F1, concurred: "We'd have had a crash. Tom takes it to the limit… that scares me. Brad listens and he knows his own limitations, and I think he'd be the first to say, 'Yeah, I'm not going to do that.'"
Cruise, who is 62 now, has provided endorsement for Pitt's next big project, telling fans to watch F1, wherein Pitt features as a former Formula 1 driver who takes to the track once again. Notable co-stars include Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Javier Bardem, while Jerry Bruckheimer and Joseph Kosinski produce.
F1 hits theaters on June 27.
