James Cameron has officially lifted the curtain on Avatar: Fire and Ash, the highly-awaited third installment in his cinematic Avatar saga.

This chapter's hero in the limelight is a brand-new villain — Varang, the fierce and formidable head of the Ash People, a Na'vi clan residing in Pandora's explosive volcanic regions. Bringing this hot-headed character to life is Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin.

Unlike the earlier installments, Fire and Ash gets darker morally. "Varang is the leader of a people who have endured untold suffering," Cameron told Empire. "She's toughened by that. She will do whatever it takes to protect them — even things that we would perceive as evil."

Cameron said that the third film tries to move away from the black-and-white tale of heroic Na'vi and evil humans. “We’re trying to evolve beyond the ‘all humans are bad, all Na’vi are good’ paradigm,” he said.

The Ash People, often referred to as Pandora’s “fire tribe,” present a stark departure from the ocean-dwelling Metkayina clan introduced in Avatar: The Way of Water. These fierce warriors have adapted to a ruthless and fiery environment, and their culture reflects that survivalist edge. At its center is Varang, a powerful presence who confronts Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and their clan in a struggle complicated by emotional depth. Cameron has teased that although the actions of Varang might seem adversarial, her motivations will resonate with sympathy and provide depth to the narrative.

Fans who can't wait to glimpse this fresh new universe won't have long to wait — the first trailer for Fire and Ash will be screened exclusively in cinemas this Friday, July 26. It will precede the screening of The Fantastic Four: The First Steps, Marvel's highly anticipated re-launch, in what promises to be a blockbuster double bill.

Cameron has already hinted that the third installment will take an unanticipated turn. "Movie three is a bit of a left turn; it's a bit of a surprise. You think you know where it's headed, but then a wrecking ball comes," he said, indicating more exploration of character and psychological depth. "You can get your blood up in this movie.". But what gets me as an artist is not just doing it all again — it's reaching a plane of character and interest you have not previously seen in an Avatar film.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to come out worldwide on December 19, 2025. Encouragingly, production is ahead of schedule, with Cameron observing that they've "doubled the amount of shots completed at this stage" compared to where Avatar: The Way of Water was at the same point — an excellent indication of more effortless progress and even more polished visuals.
