As Arnold Schwarzenegger etched his name on Hollywood's action hall of fame in the 1980s, he had company. Standing beside him was Sylvester Stallone—just as tough, just as merciless. The two actors became synonymous with adrenaline-packed blockbusters that shaped a generation.
Although today they are as close as friends, their relationship was not always that warm. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on his show, Schwarzenegger recently recalled the fierce competition that years ago consumed both men.
In the '80s, he was just a competitor. It was just a competition," Schwarzenegger disclosed. "It was all about who's making bigger movies, who's got more definition in their muscles, who's got more box office, who kills more people, who kills people more creatively, who's got bigger knives, who's got bigger guns.
He continued to explain the extremes they took themselves to: "In the end, I began running around with machine guns that were only helicopter-specific, mounted on helicopters or on tanks. It was insane. It was total war."
The tension has well and truly changed into friendship. In fact, last year to mark Stallone's 78th birthday, the Terminator star posted on Instagram to honor his long-time pal. With a collection of nostalgic images—sitting together to carve pumpkins, laughing in attendance at an event at Planet Hollywood, sporting vintage '80s attire—Schwarzenegger wrote:
"Happy birthday my friend, @officialslystallone. You are a champion and a legend. You inspire me and billions of people around the world."
TV host Marcos Mion captured it best in the comments: "The greatest standing side by side with the greatest."
From on-screen nemeses to best friends for life, Arnold and Sly's path has indeed reflected the drama and victory of the very movies that cemented them as legends.
