Paramount is set to venture into a new Star Trek movie, enlisting Andor director Toby Haynes to helm the project. The upcoming film, scripted by Seth Grahame-Smith, will unfold decades before the events portrayed in JJ Abrams' 2009 Star Trek reboot and its subsequent installments, according to reports from Variety.
Bad Robot, JJ Abrams' production banner, will produce the film, which Paramount describes as an expansion of the Star Trek universe. This announcement comes alongside Paramount's ongoing commitment to developing the fourth installment of the rebooted Star Trek film series, encompassing Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016).
The fourth film is anticipated to reunite the core cast, featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg, and is deemed the conclusive chapter of the series. The project has encountered a prolonged development process, with initial plans in 2016 confirming Chris Hemsworth's return to reprise his role as George Kirk, the father of Captain James T Kirk (Pine).
During the 2016 announcement, Paramount revealed that Star Trek 4 would explore the meeting between Captain Kirk and his father, a figure whose legacy has profoundly impacted him. However, the film has faced various script challenges and delays since then. Despite the hurdles, the studio remains dedicated to bringing the next installment to fruition.
