At the 2024 Grammys, the spotlight shone on the incredible talent of singer Dua Lipa as she kicked off the night with her latest track, 'Training Season,' setting the stage on fire before captivating the audience with her psychedelic-infused hit, "Houdini."
In a seamless performance, Lipa seamlessly weaved a snippet from her Grammy-nominated track "Dance the Night," featured in the movie "Barbie," reported by Variety.com. The British sensation, adorned in sleek all-black attire and sporting vibrant red hair, showcased her prowess by dancing energetically across the stage, even dropping to the floor during the guitar riffs of "Houdini." Host Trevor Noah hailed her as "one of the greatest performers of a generation" in his opening monologue.
A triple Grammy winner already, Lipa's 2024 nominations include Song of the Year and Best Song Written for Visual Media for "Dance the Night" from the "Barbie" soundtrack. The disco-pop anthem also earned a nomination for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, although the honor eventually went to Billie Eilish and Finneas for their contribution to the same film.
In an exclusive insight into the making of "Dance the Night," shared in Variety's "Behind the Song" series, Lipa and co-writer Mark Ronson revealed the meticulous process behind crafting the song. Immersed in the world of "Barbie," the duo brainstormed and rewrote lyrics multiple times to synchronize with the dance-party scene from the film.
Lipa explained, "'Barbie' completely took over our lives — we were completely Barb-ified." Ronson added, "We rewrote 'Dance the Night' so many times to match the picture. Dua was literally coming up with lyrics based on specific moments in the scene, engineering the song almost like a score."
Following the success of "Houdini," Lipa created anticipation by announcing the upcoming release of her next single, "Training Season," scheduled for February 15. This revelation serves as a precursor to the eagerly awaited debut of her third album, for which the release date remains undisclosed.
Reflecting on the overwhelming response to "Houdini" at Variety's Power of Women event, Lipa expressed her gratitude, saying, "Honestly, it hit me so quick — the intensity of everyone’s reaction. It’s amazing. It’s definitely the biggest reaction I’ve ever gotten from anything I’ve ever done. I’m just really happy and ready to start this next chapter."
