30 Years of 'The Flintstones': Halle Berry Reflects on its Impact for Black Women

In a recent social media post commemorating the 30th anniversary of the live-action adaptation of the beloved 1960s cartoon, Berry expressed her excitement to revisit the film after two decades. In an Instagram video, she reminisced about her portrayal of Sharon Stone, Fred Flintstone's alluring secretary, played by John Goodman.

Halle Berry, the acclaimed American actress, reflected on her experience filming the 1994 classic "The Flintstones," highlighting its significance for Black women in the entertainment sphere, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

In a recent social media post commemorating the 30th anniversary of the live-action adaptation of the beloved 1960s cartoon, Berry expressed her excitement to revisit the film after two decades. In an Instagram video, she reminisced about her portrayal of Sharon Stone, Fred Flintstone's alluring secretary, played by John Goodman.

“I thought it might be really cool to look at some of my scenes because I legit haven’t seen this movie in probably 20 years,” Berry said in the Instagram video. 
 

Upon watching a snippet of the movie, Berry commended the film's musical score, her character's distinct voice, and the iconic hairstyle she sported. As the realization dawned upon her, Berry acknowledged the profound impact of her casting.

“Being a Black woman in Bedrock seemed like a little thing but, you know, The Flintstones was the fabric of our culture,” Berry explained. “I knew that this was a big step forward for Black people, Black women especially.”

“While it was silly, and it was over the top and campy, I knew then how important this little part in this big movie actually would be.” Berry articulated. "I recognized the significance of this role as a major stride forward for Black representation, particularly for Black women."

She further emphasized, "Despite its whimsical and exaggerated nature, I understood the importance of this seemingly small role in a significant motion picture."

Directed by Brian Levant, "The Flintstones" featured a star-studded cast including Rick Moranis, Rosie O'Donnell, Elizabeth Perkins, Kyle MacLachlan, and Elizabeth Taylor.

In her post's caption, Berry expressed gratitude to fans for their enduring love for the character of Miss Stone over the years, stating, “You guys message me every year about “The Flintstones” film so I thought I’d do something special for the 30th anniversary,” Berry also wrote in the post’s caption. “Love you all for loving Miss Stone all this time,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
