The most recent Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings for 2025 include four Indian universities, with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru being one of the nation's best performers.
The remaining three universities listed are the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, IIT Madras, and Shiksha 'O' Anusandhan.
All these institutions, however, have dropped their ranks from last year's 2023 report. IISc, which was between 101-125 last year, now finds itself between 201-300.
Likewise, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, both currently ranked between 201-300, were at 151-175 and 176-200, respectively, in 2023. Shiksha 'O' Anusandhan, making its first appearance in the rankings, also finds itself in the 201-300 slot. Interestingly, IIT Bombay, which was ranked 151-175 in 2023, is no longer included in the list.
Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings 2025 evaluate the worldwide reputation of universities on their teaching and research reputation. A record 300 universities across 38 countries and regions were considered in 2025 based on six performance factors for the first time, which encompassed research and teaching votes, research and teaching pairwise, and diversity among voters in the respective categories.
Harvard University maintains its top spot for the 14th consecutive year in the rankings, while Oxford University has climbed to a joint second place, marking the highest position for a UK institution since 2015. Oxford shares this second spot with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). U.S. universities dominate the rankings, with six institutions in the top 10.
In Asia, China's Tsinghua University remains at eighth place. Other universities entering the top 50 are LMU Munich, KU Leuven, Sorbonne University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong, and the University of Manchester, all of which are ranked as among the most influential global university brands.
For the first time, ten new nations have been included in the rankings, and Malaysia and Poland are the new entrants. In addition, Sub-Saharan Africa has been recognized for the first time since 2022 for its reputation for education, together with four other new nations—Chile, Malaysia, Poland, and Portugal—joining the rankings.
