Former Health Secretary Preeti Sudan Appointed as New UPSC Chairperson

Sudan is an IAS officer of the 1983 batch, belonging to the Andhra Pradesh cadre. She occupies the seat that was recently vacated by Manoj Soni, who resigned from the post. She will continue at the post till April 2025.

Preeti Sudan, the former Union Health Secretary, is slated to assume charge as chairperson of Union Public Service Commission from Thursday. Under Article 316 A of the Constitution,

He has earlier held additional charge as Secretary in Food & Public Distribution Department and Ministries of Women & Child Development and Defence. Susan, retired as Union Health Secretary in July 2020.

During her service, she played a huge role in the launch of some major national initiatives like 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao' and 'Ayushman Bharat.' She played a vital role in the formation of the National Medical Commission and the Commission for Allied Health Professionals, besides implementing a ban on E-cigarettes.

Moreover, Sudan has worked as a Consultant for the World Bank and held other high-profile positions, such as Chair of COP-8 for the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Vice Chair of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, Chairman of the Global Digital Health Partnership, and member of the WHO's Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response.
