China may nationalise Jack Ma's Alibaba and Ant Group: Reports

This development has come at a time when the Chinese government is initiating an investigation against Ant Group. On January 24, Jack Ma had delivered a speech in which he criticised the Chinese bureaucratic system. He alleged that it stifled innovation and equated banking regulations with an "Old people's club".

Petrol, diesel prices hold even as crude remains strong

Petrol and diesel prices had increased on two successive days last Wednesday and Thursday taking gasoline to record high levels in Delhi while keeping its prices very close to record high levels in other metro cities. The rise came amid rising crude oil prices. Currently, Brent crude price is high near the $56-per-barrel mark.

Shares in Alibaba have fallen by around 25 per cent since October, when founder Ma made critical comments about China's regulator and state-owned banks. Weeks later, the flotation of Ma's financial services firm Ant Group was cancelled by the Chinese authorities.
Nifty crosses 14,500 for the first time, Sensex hits fresh high

The indices largely traded on a flat note during the day. The Nifty has touched an all-time high of 14,510.05 points. The BSE Sensex also hit an all-time high of 49,328.50 points with marginal gains. Around 12.05 p.m., Nifty was trading at 14,500.10, higher by 15.35 points or 0.11 per cent from its previous close.
Pay penalty if not already filed I-T returns, no more extensions now

The decision means that individual taxpayers who have missed the January 10 deadline for filing returns may now have to pay a penalty to complete the process. Similarly, taxpayers who need to file audit report before filing returns will have to do so by January 15 and file their returns by February 15.
For first time in FY21, retail auto sales register growth in December 2020

The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) on Monday released data which states that sales grew by 11 per cent across categories during the December month on a year-on-year (y-o-y) basis. A good crop season, better offers on purchases in the two-wheeler segment, launches in the passenger vehicle (PV) and two-wheelers, and fear of price hike in January, has backed the growth in the sector.
Sensex falls 144 points, banking stocks fall
