Noel Naval Tata, as the newly appointed chairman of Tata Trusts, had expressed his eagerness to carry forward the legacy of Ratan Naval Tata and the founding fathers of the Tata Group. In what can be described as a close-knit family affair, the board of the Tata Trusts met in joint session on Friday and decided - unanimously - to name Noel Tata, Ratan Tata's half-brother, as its new chairperson after the latter's demise.
"I am deeply honored and humbled by the responsibility that has been cast on me by my fellow Trustees. I look forward to carrying on the legacy of Mr. Ratan N. Tata and the Founders of the Tata Group," Noel Tata said.
"Founded more than a century ago, the Tata Trusts are a unique vehicle for undertaking social good. On this solemn occasion, we rededicate ourselves to carrying on our developmental and philanthropic initiatives and continuing to play our part in nation-building," he added.
The Trustees also condoled the passing away of Ratan Tata, saluting his invaluable contribution to the Tata Group and to the nation.
In the subsequent meetings conducted on the very day itself of the joint session, it was unanimously decided that Noel Tata would be made Chairman of all the different Trusts governed under Tata Trusts and he would be made Chairmen Tata Trusts. It would be effective immediately.
Noel Tata is relatively low-profile in his leadership, unlike his father Ratan Tata whose role had gone widely public. He has been playing a key role in the conglomerate's growth since his joining Tata Group in the early 2000s. This year, three kids-Leah, Maya, and Neville-became trustees in various trusts controlled by the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust. Leah is currently VP of The Indian Hotels and Maya with Tata Capital. He works with Trent and is also on the leadership team at Star Bazaar.
Tata Trusts is India's oldest philanthropic institution. Since its inception in 1892, it has been a basis for community development. Established in the visionary philanthropy of founder Jamsetji Tata, the Trusts continue to be committed to catalyzing transformative change and leading the advancement of communities across the country.
