Kristalina Georgieva Reappointed for Second Term as IMF Managing Director

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Executive Board has unanimously reappointed Kristalina Georgieva to serve another five-year term as the IMF Managing Director, beginning October 1, 2024.

A statement released by the Executive Board's coordinators, Afonso S. Bevilaqua and Abdullah F. BinZarah, confirmed the decision, highlighting Georgieva's exceptional leadership during her first term in navigating significant global challenges.

During her tenure, Georgieva spearheaded the IMF's swift response to various global crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement noted her instrumental role in approving over $360 billion in new financing for 97 countries affected by the pandemic, providing debt relief to the most vulnerable members, and facilitating a historic $650 billion Special Drawing Rights (SDR) allocation.

Under Georgieva's guidance, the IMF introduced innovative financing mechanisms such as the Resilience and Sustainability Facility and the Food Shock Window. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in securing a 50% increase in the Fund's quota to strengthen its permanent resources and advocated for the inclusion of a third Sub-Saharan African chair on the IMF Board.

Looking towards the future, the Board expressed confidence in Georgieva's commitment to prioritizing macroeconomic and financial stability while ensuring the IMF remains adaptable to the evolving needs of its diverse membership.

Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, has served as the IMF Managing Director since October 1, 2019. Prior to her current role, she held prominent positions at the World Bank and the European Commission, demonstrating a wealth of experience in international cooperation, crisis response, and financial management.
