India's domestic carriers recorded a strong year-on-year increase of 10.35% in passengers at 431.98 lakh during the financial year 2025 (FY25) from 391.46 lakh seen in FY24, according to Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data released on Saturday.
The cumulative total of passengers carried during March 2025 stood at 145.42 lakh compared with 133.68 lakh carried during March last year, with month-on-month growth in passengers at 8.79%, as per the official statistics.
IndiGo, India's low-cost carrier, led the market and transported 93.1 lakh passengers, winning a whopping market share of 64%, according to the DGCA report.
The Air India Group transported 38.8 lakh passengers with a market share of 26.7%.
Other operators like Akasa Air and SpiceJet transported 7.2 lakh and 4.8 lakh, respectively, transporting market shares of 5% and 3.3%.
The overall cancellation rate of booked domestic flights in March 2025 was recorded at 0.56%, DGCA further stated.
For March, the total number of passenger-related grievances filed against domestic carriers stood at 739. At a rate of about 0.51 grievances per 10,000 passengers, flight issues was the biggest source of grievance. Out of these 739 complaints, 733 (99.2%) have already been settled by airlines.
During the period, India's total domestic air passenger traffic rose by 6.12% to 16.13 crore in 2024 from 15.2 crore in the earlier year, according to the DGCA.
In December 2024, more than 1.49 crore passengers flew on domestic airlines, up by 8.19% from 1.38 crore passengers flown in December 2023.
As air travel demand in India remains on the upswing, Indian airlines are expanding networks and fleets, further establishing the country as the world's among the fastest growing aviation markets.
