India’s Coal Production Sees 6% Growth, Surpassing 830 Million Tonnes

Total coal production till January 2025 is about 104.43 MT which reflects an increment of 4.38% from the one recorded in 100.05 MT corresponding period of last year.

The country's coal sector saw a growth of 5.88 percent with production rising to 830.66 million tonnes (MT) during April 2024 to January 2025 of the current financial year, up from 784.51 MT in the same period of 2023-24, said a statement by the Coal Ministry released on Monday.

Total coal production till January 2025 is about 104.43 MT which reflects an increment of 4.38% from the one recorded in 100.05 MT corresponding period of last year.

In contrast, contribution towards captive, commercial and others by way of captive, commercial, and others stood particularly robust by recording production on 31.07 per cent increment with its contribution towards standing at 19.68 MT against the record of 15.01 MT during the same period last year.

Coal dispatch too has followed suit with this increase. Coal dispatched in January 2025 totaled 92.40 MT and recorded an increase of 6.31 percent over 86.92 MT during the comparable period of last year.

Additionally, the coal dispatch from captive and other entities for January 2025 has been able to exhibit a healthy growth, at 17.72 MT as compared to 13.64 MT in the corresponding period of the previous year, which translated into an increase of 29.94 per cent. Cumulative coal dispatch up to January 2025 stood at 843.75 MT, which means it increased by 5.73 per cent over 798.02 MT recorded during the corresponding period of the previous year.

As of January 2025, the total coal production from captive and commercial mines for the financial year 2024-25 has surged to 150.25 million tonnes (MT), surpassing last financial year's total of 147.12 MT by January 27, 2025, 64 days ahead of schedule. This marks an impressive 34.05 year-on-year growth from 112.08 MT at the end of January 2024, underscoring the resilience and accelerated pace of India's coal industry, the official statement said.

Coal dispatch also mirrored this success with the total dispatch for the financial year at 154.61 MT till January 11, 2025, overtaking the last financial year's total of 142.79 MT. It showed a robust increase of 33.75 per cent over January 2024's total of 115.57 MT and ensured continuous, uninterrupted supply of coal to power, steel, and cement sectors.

Further, the Ministry of Coal has issued Mine Opening Permissions for three new mines - Bhaskarpara, Utkal E, and Rajhara North (Central and Eastern).

Significantly, it may be mentioned that mine opening permission in Rajhara North (Central and Eastern), which has been allocated to Fairmine Carbon Pvt. Ltd., is the first commercial coal mine in Jharkhand. This shall immensely help improve the production of coal as well as aid the role of commercial mining in that region, the statement added.
