India pips Japan to become world's third-largest auto market

In 2022, according to the preliminary data, India sold at least 4.25 million new vehicles compared to 4.2 million sold in Japan. India's sales volume will further increase with the inclusion of upcoming commercial vehicle Q4 sales data from Tata Motors and other manufacturers.

India has left behind Japan to emerge as the third-largest auto market in the world, news agency ANI reported.

In 2022, according to the preliminary data, India sold at least 4.25 million new vehicles compared to 4.2 million sold in Japan.

4.13 million new cars were delivered in India between January and November 2022, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers. If the December sales figure of Maruti Suzuki, the largest automaker in India, released on Sunday is added, India's total sales figure goes up to 4.25 million.

In 2021, China once again topped the global auto market, with 26.27 million vehicles sold. Similarly, the US once again grabbed the second spot with sales of 15.4 million vehicles. Japan was at the third spot with the sale of 4.44 million units.
