Increased App Restorations on Play Store Following Google's Billing Compliance; IAMAI Raises Worries

Murugavel J, the founder and CEO of matrimony.com, disclosed that only eight apps from their portfolio, including Bengali Matrimony, Marathi Matrimony, Tamil Matrimony, Jodii, and Bharat Matrimony, were reinstated upon accepting Google's terms. Despite this, the majority of their 100-plus apps are yet to be restored on the Play Store, he stated.

Following a recent development on Sunday, several apps have made a comeback on the Play Store after adhering to Google's billing policy. However, concerns linger as a significant portion of delisted apps remains off the platform, according to the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).

Expressing dissatisfaction with Google's actions, Murugavel highlighted that despite clear government directives, Google has not taken comprehensive steps to reinstate all delisted apps due to billing policy violations.

The tension between Google and certain Indian apps escalated after the removal of specific apps from the Play Store in India over disputes regarding service fee payments. Startups and prominent figures within the ecosystem have voiced their discontent with Google's actions.

IAMAI condemned the ongoing delisting of Indian apps, considering it unfair and disproportionate, particularly during ongoing legal processes. They underscored the discriminatory nature of these measures compared to Google's practices in other jurisdictions.

With the majority of apps still delisted, the government is poised to engage with Google and app representatives to address the issue in a scheduled meeting on Monday.

Notable apps such as Naukri, 99acres, and Shaadi.com have made a return to the Play Store on Saturday after reportedly complying with Google's regulations. However, the government remains firm in its stance that the delisting of Indian apps cannot be condoned.

IAMAI emphasized the need to safeguard the Indian tech ecosystem and advocated for favorable terms that align with the market dynamics to support its growth and foster an open internet environment.

Appreciating the government's proactive approach, IAMAI urged Google to restore the delisted apps to their previous status on the Play Store and engage in constructive dialogue with stakeholders to reach a mutually beneficial solution.
