The EPF account is short for the Employment Provident Fund account, which acts as a sort of savings fund that will be later provided back to the employee after their retirement or if they get a different job.

Who’s Eligible to Get EPF Scheme?

Anyone who is employed under any company or organization that has 20 or more employees is eligible for this scheme. Organizations with less than 20 employees can also voluntarily register to provide EPF to their employees, but it’s not required to do so strictly. The government introduced this scheme through the Employees Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1952.

Under this scheme, the employer will deposit a small amount of money from the employee’s salary to the EPFO online platform, which is short for the Employees’ Provident Fund Organization. Apart from the employee’s contribution, the employer will contribute a small amount, and on top of both, a compound interest rate of 8.5% is also applied. The government reviews the 8.5% interest rate, and they can change it at any moment.
