Gadkari Envisions India's Road Infrastructure Rivaling the US in the Next Five Years

Over the past nine years, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has awarded contracts for projects worth more than Rs 50 lakh crore. Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways in India, has set an ambitious goal to make the country's road infrastructure equal to that of the United States within the next five years. He aims to decongest metros, considerably reduce travel time and road mishaps, and enhance the overall quality of road infrastructure. Gadkari highlighted the transparency, time-bound decision-making, and emphasis on quality in the ministry's approach to project approvals and execution.

He expressed his vision to double the size of the automobile industry to Rs 15 lakh crore in the next five years, aiming to make India a prominent player in the sector.

The minister advocated for the adoption of electric and flex fuel vehicles to reduce fossil fuel consumption, emphasizing the potential of ethanol as an alternative fuel. Gadkari envisioned a future where Indian farmers could double as energy producers by cultivating crops for ethanol production.

Additionally, Gadkari discussed efforts to transform public transportation by introducing ropeways, cable cars, and electric buses in cities. Projects worth over Rs 65,000 crore have been initiated to decongest metros, improve urban connectivity, and enhance travel efficiency.

While addressing road safety concerns, Gadkari acknowledged the need for a mindset change among the public and emphasized the role of awareness campaigns involving media, social and educational institutions, NGOs, and celebrities. Despite challenges, the minister remains committed to achieving the vision of transforming India's infrastructure and transportation landscape.
