BSNL Posts Consecutive Quarterly Profits for the First Time in 18 Years

In the last quarter of the previous fiscal year, BSNL had reported a loss of Rs 849 crore. The company has reduced its losses by 58 percent for the whole financial year 2024-25 to Rs 2,247 crore from Rs 5,370 crore in FY24.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) reported a net profit of Rs 280 crore in the January-March quarter, its second straight quarter in the black after years of red ink. This comes after the company's first profitable quarter during October-December 2024-25, indicating a significant turnaround for the state-run telecom behemoth.

The total revenue of the telecom company in FY25 grew by 10 percent to Rs 23,427 crore from Rs 21,302 crore in the last fiscal. This growth has been largely driven by government efforts such as strategic allocation of spectrum and infusion of capital, which have helped enhance BSNL's operational strength.

EBITDA zoomed to Rs 5,396 crore in FY25, over two times higher than Rs 2,164 crore in FY24, and the margin of the company increased significantly to 23.01 percent from 10.15 percent.

BSNL has also been able to cut its spending by 3 percent for the year, bringing down expenses from Rs 26,673 crore to Rs 25,841 crore.

The business is further strengthening its network infrastructure with a ramped-up 4G expansion and fibre upgrades. Increased connectivity initiatives have targeted both city and countryside, as well as customer-centric digital innovations like national WiFi roaming, which provides smooth internet connectivity across various networks.

Describing the outcome, BSNL Chairman and Managing Director A. Robert J. Ravi remarked, "The dramatic turnaround is evidence of professional management, government backing and single-minded focus on both the top line and the bottom line. BSNL is not just reviving, but redefining."

He also reiterating the future path of the company: "With controlled costs and ramped-up 4G/5G rollout, we are convinced of being able to maintain this growth trajectory and provide affordable, world-class connectivity to all Indians – to whom we owe a great debt. We will not be pursuing profits as our ultimate goal. We will be setting a new standard for telecom excellence in public service.". When we always do the right things – deliver world-class service, reach the unreached, innovate for inclusion – profits will consequently follow as a by-product of that excellence.
