Anand Mahindra on Work-Life Balance: 'Change the World in Just 10 Hours a Day'

"I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy and other corporate leaders. My point is that we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work. So it's not about 70 or 90 hours at work," quipped the business leader.

Speaking on Saturday at 'Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025' in the national capital, Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said that realising the 'Viksit Bharat' goal lies more in the quality of work done rather than just the quantity while touching upon the ongoing debate by the country's top corporate leaders on the issue of work hour balance.

"I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy and other corporate leaders. My point is that we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work. So it's not about 70 or 90 hours at work," quipped the business leader.

The business leader continued by saying, "It depends on the output of the work, and you can change the world in 10 hours.

On questioning him on the number of hours he puts at work, he said: "I don't want it to be about time. I don't want it to be about quantity. Ask me what the quality of my work is. Don't ask me how many hours I put in."

In his words: "renewable energy": "recharging my batteries from interacting with the young people".

"Today, I lived up to all my hope, so my batteries are fully charged. It was a wonderful event," he said.
The controversy about work-life balance this week erupted as L&T Chairman S.N. Subrahmanyan suggested workers to work 90 hours a week, including Sundays.
After that, the company said the remarks of the chairman reflect the wider ambition of building the nation saying, "underlining that results of extraordinary achievements require extraordinary endeavour".

While condemning the remarks by Subrahmanyan, celebrities including Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone to Harsh Goenka, Chairperson of the RPG Group did not stay silent.

However, the Department of Youth Affairs has organized 'Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue' here from January 10-12 at Bharat Mandapam. This event is a reimagining of the National Youth Festival. This would present youth with an ideal opportunity to put forward innovative solutions for 'Viksit Bharat'.
