Toyota has confirmed the sixth-generation RAV4 SUV, one of the most highly awaited launches considering the popularity of the model in the U.S. and worldwide.
Sitting on a revised version of its predecessor platform, the new RAV4 is sold only in hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) flavors with no regular petrol-only variant offered. A sporty GR Sport version will also be offered.
At the front, the SUV has restyled C-shaped LED headlights, a body-colored front grille, and aggressive air intakes. The profile is highlighted by trapezoidal wheel arches and an aggressive character line that runs from the lower front door to the rear D-pillar. Alloy wheels measure 17-, 18-, or 20 inches based on the trim.
Moving towards the back, the car features new LED taillamps seamlessly integrated into the tailgate, accompanied by a large roof spoiler and roof rails. The rear bumper features an aggressive skid plate for a rugged appearance.
In terms of dimensions, the RAV4 measures from 4,595 to 4,618 mm long and 1,687 to 1,722 mm tall, depending on the variant, with the wheelbase of the vehicle being the same at 2,690 mm. Customers can pick from three styles — Core, Sport, and Rugged — with each having its respective trim choices. The Core range has LE, XLE, and Limited trims; the Rugged style adds the new Woodland grade; and the Sport version has SE, XSE, and GR Sport trims.
On the inside, the new RAV4 features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a floating infotainment screen measuring either 10.5 or 12.9 inches, depending on the trim. Other standouts include a heads-up display and a nine-speaker JBL premium audio system, in addition to a standard six-speaker setup. What's interesting is that there are no longer physical buttons for climate control but rather digital controls that are accessed through the touchscreen. Toyota also introduced its Arene software development platform in the infotainment system, terming it their "first step toward fully software-defined vehicles."
Powertrain choices are a 2.5-liter gasoline engine driving HEV and PHEV models. The hybrid makes 226 BHP in front-wheel drive and 236 BHP in all-wheel-drive configurations. The plug-in hybrid is exclusive to AWD and makes 320 BHP. Toyota credits the performance increase to its transaxle and power control unit improvements, a bigger battery pack, and the utilization of silicon carbide semiconductors in the front axle.
The PHEV variant has an 80 km electric-only driving range. The XSE and Woodland versions also cater to DC fast charging via a CCS port and are able to charge from 10% to 80% in 30 minutes.
The all-new RAV4 is scheduled for global launch later this year, reaching more than 180 countries and regions.
