Tatas Commence Car Production at Acquired Ford India Plant in Gujarat

The new TPEM facility, spanning 460 acres, is Tata Motors' second plant in Gujarat and has a manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, scalable to 420,000 units per annum.

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEM), a subsidiary of Tata Motors, announced the rollout of the first Tata-badged car from its new plant in Gujarat's Sanand. Acquired from Ford India last year, the plant underwent significant retooling and upgrades to accommodate both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) models.

The new TPEM facility, spanning 460 acres, is Tata Motors' second plant in Gujarat and has a manufacturing capacity of 300,000 units per annum, scalable to 420,000 units per annum. The plant underwent extensive modifications, including the addition of new dies for stamping critical skin panels, integration of additional robots, grippers, and fixtures in the weld shop, and enhancements in the paint shop's handling systems and robotic setup.

The facility currently employs over 1,000 staff and technicians, and plans to create an additional 1,000 jobs in the next 3 to 4 months as part of production ramp-up plans. The plant's acquisition from Ford India, including the land, buildings, machinery, equipment, and transfer of eligible employees, was valued at Rs 725.70 crore.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd & TPEM Managing Director, Shailesh Chandra, expressed pride in witnessing the first car roll out of the new TPEM facility, highlighting the achievement of retooling the factory in just 12 months to accommodate a diverse range of products. The facility's focus on both ICE and EV models aligns with Tata Motors' commitment to a sustainable and diverse automotive future.
