A light plane crashed seconds after departing London Southend Airport on Sunday, with an instant closure of the airport. Authorities have not yet identified if there were casualties or injuries during the accident.
Video shared on social media shows dense black clouds of smoke rising from the site of the crash. The plane itself was not visible due to the heavy smoke, and no wreckage was identifiable in the footage.
The aircraft was owned by Zeusch Aviation, a Dutch company. Flight information indicated it had departed from Athens, Greece, and Pula, Croatia, before landing at Southend that morning. It was to proceed back to Lelystad, Netherlands, later in the night.
In a statement, Zeusch Aviation acknowledged that its plane, flight SUZ1, was involved in the crash. The company explained that it is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and added, "Our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected."
The aircraft involved has been identified as a Beechcraft B200 Super King Air — a twin-engine turboprop commonly used for patient transport, equipped with specialized medical gear. The aircraft measures roughly 12 meters in length.
After the crash, all flying activities at Southend Airport — located about 72 kilometers east of central London — have been grounded. Emergency responders, Essex Police, and air accident investigators have descended on the area to evaluate the situation.
Witness John Johnson, who was at the airport with his family, told of the horrifying sequence of events. "It took off and roughly three or four seconds later, it began turning to the left in a very sharp turn. Then it flipped and crashed head-on into the ground," he said. Johnson also added that he and his children waved to the pilots, who returned a wave just before the plane crashed.
Essex Police confirmed that they were called to attend a "serious incident" just before 4:00 p.m. on Sunday.
