In a tragic incident, the lifeless body of Mitkumar Patel, a 23-year-old Indian student, was discovered on the bank of the Thames River, four days after he was reported missing by his family. Patel, who had recently moved to the UK from India, was found at Caledonian Wharf on the Isle of Dogs on November 21 by a passerby.
Having relocated on September 19, Patel had been residing with a cousin in Plaistow, east London. He was set to move to Sheffield on November 20 to commence studies at Sheffield Hallam University and begin a part-time job at Amazon.
Concerns arose when Patel did not return home from his routine walk on November 17. His cousin reported him missing, and in the subsequent days, other family members initiated efforts to locate him, including contacting missing persons charities and distributing posters in areas he frequented.
Tragically, Patel's body was discovered on the riverbank, prompting an investigation by Scotland Yard. It was revealed that in the days leading up to his death, Patel had sent voice messages to a relative outlining his intention to end his life.
The authorities, while not considering the death suspicious, confirmed the deceased's identity and responded to the incident alongside paramedics and the fire brigade.
In response to the heartbreaking situation, Patel's cousins have initiated a fundraising campaign to repatriate his body to India. The funds raised will also assist Patel's family, who come from a farming background in a village in India. The campaign aims to provide support during this difficult time and ensure Patel's final journey home.
