Iran has officially gone to the United Nations, urging the Security Council to hold the United States and Israel accountable for escalating the recent 12-day armed conflict between Tehran and Tel Aviv.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, urged the international organization to recognize Israel and the US as aggressors and to hold them accountable for the compensation for the destruction caused during the conflict.
We officially submit here by asking the Security Council to recognize the Israeli regime and the United States of America as initiators of the act of aggression and accept their ensuing responsibility, such as paying compensation and reparations," the letter had read.
The tensions between the two escalated steeply after an unexpected Israeli air attack on June 13, which killed several senior Iranian military and nuclear officials, according to reports. The raid shocked global financial markets and fueled fears of a larger regional war.
Soon after the Israeli attack, the United States intervened by striking three of Iran's key nuclear plants—Natanz, Isfahan, and Fordow. US President Donald Trump announced that the attacks had "obliterated" Iranian nuclear potential. But internal US intelligence reports apparently gave a more measured assessment of the effects.
A truce, negotiated by Qatar with US participation, was agreed to on June 24. Although the ceasefire has generally held, Iran and Israel have accused one another of occasional breaches.
In accordance with Iranian authorities, 627 individuals have been killed in Israeli attacks throughout the conflict. In contrast, Israeli emergency services have reported 28 fatalities and over 1,300 casualties due to Iranian missile attacks.
Although the ceasefire was declared, Iranian officials are dubious about its sustainability. On Sunday, Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Abdolrahim Mousavi expressed grave doubts over the other side's intentions.
"We have serious reservations regarding the enemy's commitment to fulfilling their commitments, including the ceasefire. We stand ready to provide a firm reply if aggression is resumed," Mousavi was quoted as saying by the Fars News Agency.
He also proclaimed Iran's role in the war: "We did not initiate the war, but we have retaliated against the aggressor with all our might."
