South Korean Court Reverses PM’s Impeachment, Reinstates Him as Acting President

Han, the second-highest official in South Korea, became acting leader after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the opposition-held National Assembly. This followed Yoon's declaration of martial law on December 3, prompting a major political crisis.

South Korea's Constitutional Court overruled the National Assembly's impeachment of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, restoring him as acting president.

Han, the second-highest official in South Korea, became acting leader after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached by the opposition-held National Assembly. This followed Yoon's declaration of martial law on December 3, prompting a major political crisis.

But in late December, Han himself was impeached by the assembly over political battles with opposition lawmakers.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court said it had ruled to reverse Han's impeachment.

The court has not yet decided on the impeachment of President Yoon. If the court finds him guilty, South Korea will be obligated to conduct a national election to have a new president elected. If the court finds in his favor, Yoon would be returned to office.
