The South Korea's National Assembly voted on Saturday to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his botched imposition of martial law.

Yoon will be suspended from his duties as soon as the impeachment resolution is delivered to his office, while Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as acting president, reports Yonhap news agency.

An impeachment motion against Yoon passed 204-85, with three abstentions and eight invalid ballots, as all 300 lawmakers cast their ballots.

The People Power Party (PPP) of President Yoon decided just before the proceeding to participate in the vote but opposed impeachment.

The result showed 12 PPP lawmakers broke from their party line to vote in favor of impeachment.

A two-thirds majority was needed to pass the motion, which the opposition bloc comprised 192 of the 300 members of Parliament.

The first attempt to impeach Yoon last Saturday failed after nearly all PPP lawmakers boycotted the vote.

A second impeachment motion against Yoon was submitted on Thursday by the major opposition Democratic Party and five other minor opposition parties, charging him with violating the Constitution and other laws by declaring martial law on December 3. The decree was revoked six hours later after the Assembly voted to rescind it.

The second motion modified the first motion to delete a few charges against Yoon, but add others, such as accusing Yoon of ordering troops and the police to arrest lawmakers while martial law was in force.

The motion now awaits the Constitutional Court ruling on whether to reinstate or remove Yoon from office.

If the impeachment is upheld, Yoon will become the second President to be ousted after former President Park Geun-hye in 2017.
