Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu recently lauded the robust strategic alliance between his nation and China, emphasizing mutual respect and China's unwavering support for Maldives' sovereignty. The President, known for his pro-China stance, expressed satisfaction with the long-standing cooperation that dates back to the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1972.
Following a high-profile state visit to China, President Muizzu emphasized the pivotal role of China's Belt and Road Initiative in elevating bilateral relations to new heights. In an interview with China's CGTN channel, he affirmed that China's non-interference policy in the Maldives' internal affairs solidifies the strong relationship between the two nations.
During the visit, both countries upgraded their ties to a strategic partnership, and President Muizzu anticipates continuous strengthening of China-Maldives relations. He praised Chinese President Xi Jinping for prioritizing citizens' interests and ensuring China's economic success under his leadership.
President Muizzu's remarks also address the ongoing diplomatic tension with India, arising from derogatory comments by three deputy ministers. The President suspended the ministers and urged India to withdraw military personnel by March 15, emphasizing Maldives' commitment to independence and sovereignty.
Upon his return from China, President Muizzu hinted at reducing dependency on India, citing plans to secure essential imports from alternative sources. He emphasized Maldives' status as an independent and sovereign state, asserting that no country, regardless of size, should exert undue influence on its domestic affairs.
Furthermore, President Muizzu declared a review of over 100 bilateral agreements with New Delhi, signaling a shift in Maldives' foreign policy. As he navigates the complex geopolitical landscape, the President reiterates his commitment to safeguarding the Maldives' autonomy and resisting external influences on its domestic affairs.
