North Korea Announces Plans to Launch Three Additional Military Spy Satellites and Expand Nuclear Arsenal in the Coming Year

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) revealed that Kim Jong-un highlighted the successful launch of the first spy satellite, Malligyong-1, in 2023, announcing plans for three more such satellites in 2024.

North Korea, as reported by its state media, has outlined ambitious plans for the upcoming year, aiming to launch three additional spy satellites and bolster its nuclear arsenal. Following a five-day plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un conveyed these goals, emphasizing preparedness against perceived US military threats.

Moreover, Kim Jong-un instructed the enhancement of the Navy's military capabilities and emphasized the development of advanced unmanned combat systems like spy and attack drones, as well as electronic warfare mechanisms.

This announcement follows North Korea's earlier unveiling of plans at the 2021 party congress, which included the development of a nuclear-powered submarine, multiple nuclear warheads, and the launch of a military spy satellite. Recent advancements in reconnaissance and attack drone technology were also showcased by North Korea in 2022.

Regarding inter-Korean relations, Kim Jong-un expressed disillusionment with South Korea, stating that Seoul's declaration of the North as a primary enemy and the impossibility of unification have shaped the current hostile relationship. He denounced any prospects for reconciliation and unity, characterizing the inter-Korean dynamic as that of "two hostile countries."
