An American private company has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully landing a commercial spacecraft on the Moon, marking the first U.S. vehicle to accomplish this feat in over five decades. Intuitive Machines, the company behind this groundbreaking achievement, has named the spacecraft Odysseus. The historic landing took place at approximately 6:23 p.m. ET on Thursday, making it the first American spacecraft to touch down on the lunar surface since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972.
Bill Nelson, the Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), expressed his excitement, stating, "Today, for the first time in half a century, America has returned to the Moon." Intuitive Machines, headquartered in Houston, Texas, successfully landed its Odysseus robot near the lunar south pole. Nelson highlighted the significance of this mission, emphasizing its contribution to scientific innovation and American leadership in space exploration.
Amidst moments of anticipation, Flight Director and Chief Technology Officer Tim Crain confirmed the successful landing, announcing, "What we can confirm, without a doubt, is our equipment is on the surface of the moon, and we are transmitting." Cheers erupted among colleagues and spectators nationwide as confirmation of the landing spread.
Despite a temporary loss of communication during the spacecraft's final descent, Intuitive Machines reassured the public, stating, "After troubleshooting communications, flight controllers have confirmed Odysseus is upright and starting to send data." The company expressed its commitment to sharing the first images from the lunar surface, marking a historic achievement in space exploration.
During a livestream event, Stephen Altemus, Chief Executive Officer of Intuitive Machines, delivered a message of triumph, saying, "I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting. Welcome to the moon."
The successful landing initiates a seven-day window for exploration before darkness envelops the landing site, hindering the spacecraft's ability to harness solar energy and exposing it to freezing temperatures, according to ABC News.
In a separate historic achievement, India made its mark in space exploration when its moon mission, Chandrayaan-3, became the first to land in the uncharted south pole of the Moon. This accomplishment propelled India into an elite group of nations capable of soft-landing technology on the lunar surface, joining the ranks of countries leading the way in space exploration.
