In the book, Michelle acknowledged that she doesn't "have the answers" to those questions. What she did stress, however, is that their relationship never rested on the premise of being each other's "everything" — or shouldering each other's entire emotional baggage.

Michelle debunked the divorce gossip on her guest appearance on the Work in Progress podcast by Sophia Bush, which was released on April 9. Disproving the rumor, she claimed, "The interesting thing is that, when I say 'no,' for the most part people are like, 'I get it, and I'm okay.'"

She went on to comment about the expectations so many put on women, further observing, "That's the thing that we as women, I think.we struggle with disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year people were.they couldn't even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing."

Michelle went on, "This couldn't be a grown woman just making a set of choices for herself, right? But that's what society does to us. We begin actually, at last going, 'What am I doing? Who am I doing this for?' And if it doesn't fit into the kind of stereotype of what people think we should be doing, then it gets stigmatized as something bad and awful."
