"In Fordyce, Arkansas, a mass shooting outside a grocery store has killed three people and left ten others wounded, according to state police. At a news conference, officials said two law enforcement officers were among the wounded. The civilian injuries are believed to have ranged from non-life-threatening to critical, Xinhua news reported.
Police returned fire at the shooter, who is in custody and was critically wounded, authorities said.".
Investigating the event were sent federal special agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives from the New Orleans field office.
Fordyce, a city with a population of around 3,400, is located some 70 miles south of Little Rock, the state capital of Arkansas.
"I've been briefed on the tragic shooting in Fordyce, and I'm in constant contact with State Police at the scene. I am thankful to law enforcement and first responders for their quick and heroic action to save lives," Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders wrote on social media.
According to the US-based "Gun Violence Archive," there have been 234 mass shooting incidents in the United States this year, with at least four casualties in each such incident, at the most conservative computation.
