As the Maldives President Muhammad Muizzu comes calling to India, the principal opposition on Tuesday struck back at his inexperienced and naive government, saying that it finally seems to have come to its senses that foreign policy cannot be pursued with falsehood and deceit.
Former president Mohamed Nasheed drew from the same stride, referring to India and Maldives as natural partners while speaking about the meetings Muizzu had with the Indian leadership in New Delhi.
His first state visit to India is planned from October 6 to 10.
Pro-China Muizzu rode to the office last November on the back of an aggressive 'India Out' campaign. Within hours of taking oath, he asked India to repatriate its military personnel from the three platforms in the archipelagic nation.
However after mutual understanding, nearly 90 staff were sent back by May 10 this year. The relations between the two South Asian countries further deteriorated when two Maldivian ministers sent caricatures after Modi uploaded pictures of Lakshadweep Islands in January this year. Indian tourists declared mass boycott of Maldives which resulted in slide to number six position in mid-2024 from number one position in post-Covid years.
