Maldives, India have Unbreakable Bond Extending Beyond Diplomacy, says Mohamed Muizzu

Addressing a state dinner in honor of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday night, President Muizzu expressed deep gratitude to the government of India for its longstanding support and unshakable friendship.

Declaring the Indian Ocean a symbol of the centuries-old relationship between India and the Maldives, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives emphasized the abiding and close affinity between the two countries, calling it one that goes beyond customary diplomacy.

In commemoration of both countries' 60 years of diplomatic interaction, Muizzu described their relationship as one that bears witness to a common legacy and a firm, enduring association.

"It's not only the political relationship between our two countries," Maldivian President's Office said in a statement attributed to Muizzu. "The two nations' connections date back through centuries of mutual cultural and commercial exchanges.".

He referred to the Indian Ocean as a "living testament" to this historical connection, adding that the old relationship between Maldivians and Indians as neighbouring merchants had spawned a robust and long-lasting connection.

The President of Maldives also addressed his government's vision of building a more inclusive and dynamic economy, with an emphasis on the empowerment of youth as well as regional peace and security. He recognized India as an important partner in achieving these objectives.

Reciting his country's resolve to enhance relations with India, Muizzu hoped that the relationship would keep flourishing, ushering in "lasting peace and prosperity" to both nations.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi and President Muizzu had extensive talks focusing on enhancing collaboration across critical areas of trade, defence, and maritime security.

The meeting represented a significant positive turn in bilateral ties after the dip in diplomatic tensions. Pricedly, India announced a ₹4,850 crore line of credit to the Maldives and pledged to proceed with working towards the conclusion of a free trade agreement in the near term.
